LABS · RESEARCH PILOT
pilotTom of Finland Foundation: the pilot.
The founding laboratory. An archive large enough to test the methodology, a scholarly authority that stays final, and an institution whose systems the practice had already rebuilt.
THE QUESTION
Can a small institution afford the scholarship that once cost millions?
Whether multimodal AI, evidence graphs, archival research agents, and structured human review can reduce the clerical burden of catalogue raisonné research while the Foundation’s scholarly authority remains final.
GROUNDWORK
Collections management first.
Before any research runs, the collection had to exist as data. A collections management system was established as the groundwork, alongside the practice’s rebuild of the Foundation’s website, records, and infrastructure.
METHOD
Begin with one hundred works.
Labor measured before and after. Accuracy compared with known records. Human correction and review time recorded.
GOVERNANCE
Partners contribute resources, not ownership.
Partners contribute resources to the Foundation’s project, not ownership over its scholarly corpus. The architecture is vendor-neutral. Institution-specific data and scholarship remain with the Foundation.
RESULTS
Results will be published here, including failure cases.
Until measurement is complete, no productivity percentage will be presented as a result.
