MEET SANITY

A modern way to manage your content.

Most nonprofit leaders know WordPress. It has powered websites across the world for over twenty years, and for a long time, it was the only practical choice.

Sanity takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of tying your text and images directly to one specific website layout, Sanity treats your content as a clean, centralized library. Your exhibitions, artist profiles, publications, and press releases live in an organized repository that is completely separate from how your website happens to look today.

That separation changes everything. When you want to refresh your website’s visual design three years from now, you don’t have to rebuild your content from scratch. When you want to share collection records with a museum network, an interactive kiosk, or an academic research project, the information is already structured and ready to go.

02 · FLEXIBILITY

Content That Lives in One Central Place

Update an exhibition date, artist biography, or press notice once, and it updates everywhere—across your current website, digital archive, and future platforms.

02 · FLEXIBILITY
Structured Content
03 · LONGEVITY

Freedom from the Redesign Cycle

Traditional website redesigns often mean painfully copying and pasting years of old articles into a new theme. With structured content, your records remain intact while designs evolve around them.

MADE FOR SMALL TEAMS

Less time managing technology. More time doing your work.

Cultural nonprofits rarely have full-time software engineers on staff. More often, the website is managed by an executive director, an archivist, a communications coordinator, or a dedicated volunteer juggling half a dozen other responsibilities.

When a website relies on dozens of third-party plugins and constant software updates, routine operations become stressful. A sudden plugin incompatibility can take down an exhibition announcement right before an opening reception. Sanity removes that operational burden entirely.

COLLABORATION

Anyone on Staff Can Contribute

Different team members can be invited with appropriate permissions. Curators can draft exhibition texts, development staff can post sponsor acknowledgments, and guest researchers can review essays—all without giving everyone administrative keys to server settings.

PURPOSE-BUILT

Built Around Cultural Records

Instead of forcing everything into generic "blog posts", Sanity lets you create clear, dedicated forms for Exhibitions, Artists, Publications, Public Programs, and Press Releases. Entering an exhibition feels as natural as filling out an object record.

MAINTENANCE-FREE

No Nightly Maintenance Anxiety

Sanity is a fully managed cloud service. There are no databases for your staff to back up manually, no PHP versions to upgrade, and no security vulnerabilities introduced by unmaintained third-party plugins.

SCALABILITY

Room to Grow at Your Own Pace

Start simply by managing exhibition announcements and news. As your institution expands, the same platform can support multi-language translation, searchable permanent collections, or scholarly archives.

THE COST QUESTION

Modern doesn’t have to mean expensive.

A common misconception among cultural leaders is that modern software architecture is only for well-funded major institutions with six-figure IT budgets. The reality is quite the opposite.

Sanity offers a remarkably generous Free tier that includes up to 20 user seats, generous monthly API requests, and ample document storage. For almost every small-to-midsize museum, artist foundation, historical society, or independent archive, the free tier provides all the capacity the team will ever need.

If your organization eventually needs advanced role permissions, custom publishing schedules, or additional seats, Sanity’s Growth plan starts at $15 per seat per month—a predictable, transparent operating expense.

$0 FOREVER

Sanity Free Plan ($0 / Month)

Includes up to 20 user seats, generous asset hosting, and full access to Sanity Studio. For most cultural nonprofits, this completely eliminates recurring CMS subscription fees.

$15 / SEAT

Sanity Growth Plan ($15 / Seat / Mo)

Designed for institutions that need advanced role-based permissions, custom editorial scheduling, and expanded document quotas as their collections expand.

REAL COMPARISON

The Hidden Costs of Legacy WordPress

While WordPress software is free, small organizations routinely spend $30 to $100+ per month on managed hosting, plus annual license fees for backup plugins, security monitoring, forms, and custom fields—not to mention emergency developer invoices when plugins conflict.

HONEST PERSPECTIVE

A Fair Word on WordPress

WordPress is an extraordinary open-source achievement that democratized publishing for millions. If your existing site runs smoothly and your team is comfortable maintaining it, there is no need to change. But if maintenance fatigue is draining your staff’s energy, modern alternatives are now accessible.

Our guiding principle: small organizations should spend their limited resources on cultural preservation, exhibition curation, and community programming—not on server maintenance and plugin troubleshooting.

THE TRANSITION

You don’t have to leave your history behind.

When nonprofit directors consider modernizing their website, the biggest hesitation is almost never the destination. It is the weight of what they are already carrying.

A cultural website that has been active for ten or twenty years is not just a marketing brochure. It is an archive. It holds past exhibition checklists, opening remarks, curatorial essays, memorial tributes, press clippings, and historical photographs. The thought of losing that history—or the prospect of asking an intern to manually copy and paste thousands of past posts—stops modernization before it starts.

You do not have to choose between keeping your past and having a modern future.

PRESERVATION

Decades of Exhibition History

Past exhibitions, public talks, and symposium chronologies are extracted and structured into permanent records, ensuring your institutional timeline remains unbroken.

ATTRIBUTION

Scholarly Essays & Curatorial Writing

Long-form research articles and catalogue texts are safely preserved with their original publication dates, authors, and formatting intact.

LINK CONTINUITY

Protecting Academic Citations & Links

Every past article URL is permanently mapped to its new location. University course syllabi, Wikipedia references, and museum footnotes pointing to your site will continue to work seamlessly.

ORGANIZATION

Untangling Decades of Tags

Fifteen years of changing staff often leaves hundreds of duplicate or inconsistent tags. The transition offers a gentle, guided opportunity to clean up category sprawl without losing content.

BUILT BY CULTUREOS LABS

That’s why we built WordPress to Sanity Vault.

At CultureOS, our practice works directly with cultural institutions—including artist estates, museums, and historical archives like the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles. We encountered this exact challenge again and again: teams wanted the stability and ease of Sanity, but had no simple, reliable way to move years of historical WordPress content without hiring an expensive migration agency.

To solve this, CultureOS Labs developed WordPress to Sanity Vault. It is an open-source toolkit designed specifically for the needs of cultural archives. It takes your standard WordPress export, organizes the text and images into clean Sanity schemas, handles category cleanup, and creates permanent link redirects so nothing gets lost.

We released it on GitHub under the permissive MIT License because we believe foundational preservation tools should belong to the cultural community.

ACCESSIBLE

Extracts Standard WordPress Exports

Works directly with the standard XML or JSON file you can download from your existing WordPress dashboard with one click (Tools ➔ Export). No server-level database access required.

STRUCTURED

Structures Content for Sanity Studio

Converts unstructured blog posts into clean, validated Sanity schemas with proper dates, categories, authors, and high-resolution image links ready for your team to edit.

SEO SAFEGUARD

Automatic 301 Redirect Mapping

Generates a complete lookup map connecting every legacy WordPress link to its new home, preventing broken bookmarks and protecting search engine visibility.

CURATOR IN CONTROL

Human Oversight at Every Step

No black-box automation. The toolkit lets your team review sample records, approve category adjustments, and verify content in a private sandbox before anything goes live.

WordPress to Sanity Vault is free, open-source software under the MIT License. Available on GitHub: https://github.com/culture-os-labs/wordpress-to-sanity-vault

TECHNICAL REFERENCE & COMMON QUESTIONS

The details your technical advisors will want to know.

If you share this page with a board member, technical advisor, or freelance developer, here are the technical facts behind the toolkit.

01

Zero Third-Party Dependencies (Pure Python 3.8+)

The core scripts (sanity_direct_sync.py and sanity_ndjson_exporter.py) use only Python's standard library (urllib, json, re, time). No virtual environments, no npm packages, and no complex build pipelines required.

02

How Does It Ingest WordPress Data?

The toolkit parses standard WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR .xml) export files or REST API JSON archives, extracting post IDs, publication dates, author metadata, HTML body content, and featured image URLs.

03

Direct Sanity Cloud API vs. Offline NDJSON

Two deployment modes are supported: direct cloud synchronization via Sanity’s HTTPS Mutation API with automatic batching and request throttling, or offline export to newline-delimited JSON (NDJSON) for developer pipelines using npx sanity dataset import.

04

How Are URL Collisions and 301 Redirects Handled?

The tool generates Substack-standard dual-track URLs (/archive/[ID]-[slug]) to guarantee zero collisions across recurring exhibition titles. It outputs a complete 1:1 301 redirect map (slug_redirects_map.json) compatible with Cloudflare Workers, Next.js, and Apache/Nginx.

05

How Does Curatorial Taxonomy Review Work?

Rather than running blind script replacements, the agent protocol (SKILL.md) analyzes 15–20 years of category sprawl and suggests a consolidated 5–8 category structure. Curators review and refine the vocabulary in plain English before anything is written.

06

How Are Media Assets Handled?

High-resolution image URLs from your original WordPress uploads are preserved in Sanity as legacyHeroImageUrl references. Your new website can display them immediately while avoiding sudden cloud asset bandwidth charges, with the option to upload binaries later.

07

What Security Precautions Are Taken?

The toolkit runs read-only on your export file; your live WordPress server and database are never touched. Sanity ingestion requires only a write-scoped dataset token, and all communications use TLS 1.3 encryption.

08

What License Governs the Code?

WordPress to Sanity Vault is published under the permissive MIT License by CultureOS Labs. It can be freely used, inspected, modified, and integrated into nonprofit or commercial projects.
